The gardens, season by season

Every garden here was designed at our Pontcanna drawing board and built by our own team. We go back with a camera through the year — a portfolio should show February as honestly as June.

Spring

Spring gardens

The season that rewards planning. Bulb lawns come up through new turf, blossom carries the first colour, and freshly planted borders begin to knit together.

Summer

Summer gardens

Borders in full voice. This is when the drifts of salvia, achillea and grasses we planted in autumn earn their keep — and when clients send us the most photographs.

Autumn

Autumn gardens

Our favourite season to photograph. Grasses and seedheads catch low light, hedges hold their line, and the planting plan shows its bones before winter.

Cowbridge — miscanthus and rudbeckia holding the border into November

Llandaff — oak-sleeper steps under the copper beech

Penarth — last cut of the year, stripes for the season’s end

Winter

Winter gardens

Structure you can see. Evergreen hedging, pleached limes, corten and stone — a well-designed garden should hold its shape when everything else has gone to ground.
